Austin Date Spots: The History

The city of Austin has its own history when it comes to date spots. Raul's used to be the nightclub that many locals went to listen to live music. It was located on 2610 Guadalupe Street. It opened up in the late 70s and closed in the early 80s. It began as a venue for Chicano music, but then changed to punk rock. Because it was located close to the University of Texas, there were many college students that went there. Raul's was the first club at the time that catered to punk rock music and bands that played new wave music. Many of the popular bands also played at other local venues; just to widen their fan base. There were three bars that were under criminal surveillance by the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission and after the investigation was completed, they had to close their doors. These bars were the Los Cocodrilos Bar, La Movida Night Club, Grill and Bar as well as the Perikos Bar. The authorities determined that this bar acted as drug trafficking venue. They also accommodated as drink solicitation where the drink prices are increased just to have specific customers ask other customers to buy them drinks. Both of these infractions are considered illegal. The bars closed due to their permits being cancelled. There were nine other bars and clubs that closed, but in March 2012. These were all owned and operated by Yassine Enterprises. These bars were readied by federal and state agents due to suspicion of firearm possession, drug trafficking and money laundering.
